In "One Block, Brooklyn" Geoff Green presents a captivating survey that goes beyond the surface of street life. Through his observations, he captures the essence of a single block in Brooklyn, revealing the hidden stories embedded in the remains discarded on its sidewalks and gutters. The project takes an intriguing anthropological and archaeological approach to street photography, shedding light on the intricate dynamics of the neighborhood.
Green's intensive process adds another layer of depth to his work. Each object found in the gutter is carefully picked up (ideally with gloves). Once photographed, the image is then printed on 17x22 in paper. This isn't the end of the journey for these prints. They are returned to the very street they were born from, exposed to the elements, foot traffic, debris, and vehicular movement. Through this process, each print becomes a testament to its surroundings, creating a tangible connection between the art and its origin.
The result is a collection of prints that not only capture the visual beauty of the objects and the street but also carry with them the invisible imprints of their environment. The interplay between the original found objects, the photographic process, and the return to the street creates a rich tapestry of storytelling. It is an exploration of the textures, stories, and history that make up the fabric of this singular block in Brooklyn, NYC.
"One Block, Brooklyn" is a testament capturing the essence of a place. Unveiling the ordinary as extraordinary, shedding light on the unnoticed elements that weave together the complex narrative of a neighborhood.
